give

God has been so faithful to our church from our inception. He has developed a heart for generosity at our church among our regular givers. We are careful to be responsible with every resource God has given us and that has caused us to keep a low overhead and invest generously in our community. We believe God has called us to decide ahead what we should give and to give with joy as outlined in his word:

  • “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

We believe giving is a joy and believe that the word of God leads us to decide ahead what we should give and then to give knowing we are building God’s kingdom. We truly believe we can't out give God and that the kind of generosity Jesus showed us should cause us to joyfully give all that we have back to his church.

What we teach about money at Pursuit

Everything Comes from God(James 1:16)

Often, we make the mistake of connecting our money to

Significance - Our things do not bring us significance! When we know our significance comes from our identity in Christ, we can release what God has given us with out worrying about our significance.

Security - Our stuff doesn’t provide security, we live by faith and can release what God has provided without the anxiety of who will provide for us. God promises to provide and has provided all that we need.

Scarcity - We believe in a spirit of abundance, God owns everything and he can provide in every way necessary. When we live with a scarcity mindset, we lack faith that God has what we need and can provide. When we can give abundantly and with freedom! We can live generously in every way.

When it comes to God, we don’t believe God blesses the amount, we believe God blesses our faith in giving. When we give, we are saying everything comes from God and that we will live by faith, in the abundance of our creator and be a blessing to His world.

We are called to steward everything God has entrusted to us(Matthew 25:14-30)

We believe we should live sufficiently so we can give extravagantly and that everything God has given us was meant to be stewarded. As stewards, we have to ask questions about ownership, responsibility, accountability, and reward.

Ownership - Who owns what I have?

Responsibiity - What am i called to do with what God has given me?

Accountability - How does God hold us accountable to be good stewards with his resources?

Reward - What does God do with faithful stewards who allow Him to guide their investment of his resources?

Our answers to these questions often lead us towards being good stewards. When we believe everything comes from God, that he has called us to leverage it sacrifically for his kingdom, that he holds us accountable to our decision, and that he rewards us when we live generously, we can be free to give without anxiety or fear.

No matter what type of giver you are, you can grow in generosity

There are many types of givers and a step to grow for each one. Types of givers:

  • Not giving at all - Not ready to trust the church or give at all

  • Tippers - Haven’t really thought out what they feel called to give, they just give from what they have in their pocket.

  • Giving very comfortably - People who haven’t engaged God but give something that doesn’t hurt to chip in

  • Giving significantly - People who have engaged God and give as an act of worship, not comfortably but in step with what God has called them to give

  • Tithers - People who feel called to give a percentage, usually the first 10%, if every person in the church tithed, the church would always have more than enough. Jesus affirmed the tithe when he spoke about giving and encouraged people to grow even beyond that.

  • Giving Sacrificially - People who feel called to sacrifice in their own lifestyle to give a prioritized amount that God has led them too. Often people with a gift for generosity.

  • Extreme givers or reverse tithers- Often people who have an excess and feel called to give it away or live on a very small amount so they can invest in God’s kingdom

We believe God has called us all to continue to grow in our giving over our entire lives.

Jesus modeled generosity as an all-in proposition

Jesus couldn’t just tithe in what he was called to give! He gave his life away on earth through his ministry and in his death on the cross to connect us to God. Everything he had was God’s and it was all an act of worship back to him. All of what we have is an oppotunity to prioritize God and live in a generous way.

God wants our first and best

Throughout the bible, it teaches that God wants us to worship him with our first and our best, not our leftovers. When we prioritize Him and his kingdom, we are honoring God with our generosity. Putting God first is a lifetime choice that we continue to grow in over time. We can all be growing in this all the time as we prioritize God.
